Explorations of the interdisciplinary landscapes that shape, and are shaped by, creative practices
Talkstudio (formally Midweek Postgraduate Conversation) is an extracurricular forum that meets fortnightly on Wednesdays to explore the outer limits of practice-based research. The sessions are open to anyone interested in the shifting intellectual worlds that could change research undertaken through creative practice.

Locating Practice presentation 10.pdf
Dear all,
Here are two PDFs from last Wednesday – my presentation ‘Where is criticality located?’ and Irit Rogoff’s essay ‘Smuggling: an embodied criticality’. The Midweek Postgraduate Conversation will now pause for the Christmas break (there will not be a session on 18th December). In January the Conversation will return in a new format as part of the preparations for the Talk Studio project, which should (if everything goes to plan) start to take shape after Easter 2014. Although the one o’clock Wednesday events will not continue I am planning an alternative for those who wish to carry on exploring the complexities of ‘practitioner thinking’. Watch this space.
Have a good Xmas.
Best wishes,
Chris

Dear all, here is a PDF of last Wednesday’s Keynote ‘The Place of Writing’. This week we will continue our exploration of the “where” of writing by discussing the process of making claims within a textual format. As always, everybody is welcome. See you in the glass box at Baltic 39, 1.00 - 2.30. Best, Chris

Dear all, here is a PDF of last Wednesday’s ‘Pace in Presentations’ keynote. I have added missing citations and provided the key paragraphs from Ranciere and Todes. Next week, turning away from ‘presentions’, I will begin to explore with you the ‘where’ of locating practice through writing. As always, everybody is welcome. See you in the glass box at Baltic 39, 1.00 - 2.30. Best, Chris

‘Pace in Presentations’
Dear all, last Wednesday’s Conversation was dedicated entirely to the process of giving titles to presentations about practice. I have uploaded a PDF of the Keynote we used. Thank you to everyone who brought along a ‘working title’ and then explained what they might say under this heading. Next week, as promised, we will turn our attention to the ‘pacing’ of presented material. This will be an opportunity for us to explore the relationship between different kinds of content and the time we need to explain what we mean. This session will build on earlier discussions about Austin’s concept of performative utterances and the challenge of publically ‘locating’ knowledge derived from practice (as in, say, gallery outreach talks, academic conferences, even PhD vivas). Some of you who contributed a title last week might like to expand your topic at this Conversation but it would also be good to have short presentations from MRes and PhD students. I have invited three so far and so there is room for at least another four. Please email me directly at [email protected] if you are interested in participating. Each ‘example’ presentation will be in the Pecha Kucha format (20 slides automatically changing every 20 seconds so that one can only talk for just over 4 minutes). Remember that this is not about honing your presenting skills but an exploration of what it is possible to say. It will be a great opportunity to try out ideas. When the ‘Talk Studio’, our experimental discussion space at B39, is up and running we will experiment further with different event formats and modes of debate. Think of this Wednesday as a pilot session. Everybody welcome. See you in the glass box at Baltic 39, 1.00 - 2.30. Best Chris

Presentation titles (adjacent or congruent?)
Dear all, here is the URL for the Bruno Latour presentation we watched and discussed at the last Conversation.
http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/video/bruno-latour-nature-space-society
This Wednesday (13th Nov) I want to continue the debate we began last week on the subject of adjacent and congruent explanations in slide presentations about practice. This discussion is open to all members of the Talk Studio but will be built around provisional 'working titles' provided by MFA students who are, at present, beginning to plan the Locating Practice presentation they will give in January.
MFA students: I will need your title emailed to me by 6.00 pm Tuesday so that I can project them at the Conversation whilst each of you gives a quick verbal explanation to help us start exploring how adjacency or congruence can represent studio and exhibition practices. You can also send a small jpeg if you like. I attach stock definitions of the two terms. See you as usual in the glass box at Baltic 39, 1.00 - 2.30. Best, Chris

Practice as presentation (let's talk about this word 'performative')
Dear all, tomorrow's Conversation (Wednesday 30th October, 1.00 pm, Baltic 39, 1st Floor Glass Box) will explore how we locate ourselves as practitioners through the process of presentation (slide talks, lectures, conference papers, etc.). I also intend to examine the concept of 'performativity'. All welcome. Best, Chris

Dear all, for those of you at yesterday’s Conversation here is the third of the presentations on the notion of ‘locating’ practice. The PDF reproduces almost all of the Stanley Fish essay for you to read. Enjoy! (I am still relishing Jade’s ‘Kryptonite for artists’). Best, Chris

Locating Practice presentation 2.pdf
Dear all, Locating Practice: Where? When? Who? Here is a PDF of my second presentation on the concept of ‘locating practice’. A pattern is emerging: first, we discussed the location of art practice as a spatial proposition; second, we explored the temporal dimensions of becoming ‘located’ as practising artists (this PDF); and third (next Wednesday) we will examine ‘who’ it is that we want to locate using some ideas from Stanley Fish about the interpretive communities that create artistic identities. Best Chris

'Archive Day' (Friday 24 May 2013)
Archives and Archival Practices
An AHRC postgraduate student and staff workshop.
This interdisciplinary event challenges the conventional view of the isolated scholar sifting through dusty boxes in a dark room, and re-considers the role of archives in contemporary culture. We will explore the diverse forms that archives can take, various uses of archives in art, design and film history, conservation and creative practice, and considers the preservation and digitalisation of these vital resources in relation to issues of accessibility and cultural memory. ‘Archives and Archival Practices’ will enable us to rethink the ways we have, do or might engage with archives. Presentations by academics, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, professionals and practising artists will focus on both past and present projects.
11.45 Chris Dorsett (Professor of Fine Art) In conversation with Francesca Steele about their project at the Mining Institute: Old Journals, Past Accidents, the Performing Body Now.

'Stage Fright' Debate (Wednesday 13 March to Wednesday 20 March 2013)
Dear All,
This is the Sennett text with which I will start a new discussion next Wednesday. The topic, as some of you already know, is the stage fright this prominent sociologist experienced when he was a professional musician. We are going to use this to explore presentation nerves (in studio crits, seminar and conference presentations, post graduate vivas, interviews for academic posts etc). In this week’s session I will begin the conversation by comparing Sennett’s concept of ‘resistance’ to a Heidegger essay: Heidegger, M. (1954) ‘The Question Concerning Technology’. In David Farrell Krell, Martin Heidegger: Basic Writings, London & New York: Routledge, 1998, pp 308 – 341. I recommend that you read through Sennett before Wednesday. Following up on Heidegger will be a matter of choice after the conversation. See you in PSN (back to routine) at 1.00pm on Wednesday 13th March.
Best Chris
